The point of Lords of the Realm II is, of course, to expand your dominion over the various regions to which you are subject (contingent upon which of the numerous guides you play, you can battle in fourteenth-century Italy, eighteenth-century Massachusetts, nineteenth-century Africa or any of two dozen other one of a kind situations). You can even have the computer reenact the battle and show you how you fared if you’re not the kind to assume the role of a commander. Nevertheless, by all accounts, Lords II is wholly engrossing and manages to strike this remarkable equilibrium battles are continuous but begin delayed, giving each player ample time to survey the battlefield before the battle for strategic areas and terrain. Very few games, if any, manage to strike the perfect balance between strategy and action like Lords II does, and it’s even rarer for a computer AI in a system game to be truly capable.
